Section 1. Escort vehicles for overdimensional loads; definitions; requirements. This section establishes the number of escort vehicles required for overdimensional loads.
Subd. 1. Definitions. This subdivision provides definitions for the section.
Subd. 2. Escort vehicles required; width. In general, an escort vehicle is not required if the width of an overdimensional load is 15 feet or less at the bottom of the load or 16 feet or less at the top of the load. On a multi-lane divided roadway, one rear escort vehicle is required if the width of the load exceeds 15 feet at the bottom or 16 feet at the top. On an undivided roadway, one lead escort vehicle and one rear escort vehicle is required if the width of the load exceeds 15 feet. One lead licensed police officer is required when any part of an overdimensional load extends beyond the left of the centerline on an undivided roadway, regardless of whether the load exceeds 15 feet at the bottom or 16 feet at the top. The commissioner of transportation may require additional escorts when deemed necessary to protect public safety or to protect against damage to the roads.
Subd. 3. Escort vehicle required; length. When a vehicle is transporting an overdimensional load on a multi-lane divided roadway, one rear escort vehicle is required if the load has an overall length exceeding 110 feet and one lead and one rear escort vehicle is required if the overall length of the load exceeds 150 feet. On an undivided roadway, one lead and one rear escort vehicle is required if the load has an overall length exceeding 110 feet. The commissioner of transportation may require additional escorts when deemed necessary to protect public safety or to protect against damage to the roads.
Section 2. Repealer. The current subdivision on escort vehicles is repealed.
