Under current law, revenue received from sales of cigarettes, and related penalties, interest, and fees is deposited to the general fund, except that $22,250,000 is annually credited to the Academic Health Center fund at the University of Minnesota, and $3,937,000 is annually credited to the commissioner of health to fund medical education and research.
This bill would provide an additional $15,000,000 annual dedication to a tobacco prevention and cessation account. The funds are appropriated to the commissioner of health for tobacco prevention and cessation projects and initiatives, including public information programs that promote nonsmoking and provide background survey research and evaluation, and grants for projects and initiatives directed at the prevention of tobacco use.
Effective for revenues received after June 30, 2020.
