Under current law, a temporary driver’s license or state ID card is issued to a person when he or she applies for a new license or card. The temporary license or card is valid for 120 days. S.F. No. 18 allows a person to renew the temporary license or card by phone, mail, or e-mail if the person hasn’t received the permanent license or card within 106 days of receiving the temporary license or card. Once a driver’s license agent verifies that temporary license or card is valid, the agent must grant an extension and issue the applicant a form to show the new expiration date. At the request of the applicant, the form may be delivered by mail or e-mail.
