S.F. No. 1408 - Subtraction for medical care deductibles (as proposed to be amended by the A-1 amendment)

Author: Senator Michelle R. Benson

Prepared By: Nora Pollock, Senate Counsel (651/297-8066)

Date: March 13, 2017

As proposed to be amended, this bill authorizes a subtraction for 50 percent of the amount paid toward a taxpayer’s medical care deductible. “Deductible” is defined as the amount paid for medical care under a health insurance plan that is paid by the taxpayer before the taxpayer’s health insurance plan begins to cover those expenses. Any amounts used to claim this subtraction may not also be used to claim the long term care credit. Also provides a corresponding subtraction for calculating alternative minimum tax. Effective beginning in tax year 2017.
